CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Unlike the previous nights, Aisling wasn’t relaxed enough to sleep, so she spent most of the night meditating. She was refreshed and ready when her alarm brought her out of it at four o’clock in the morning. Arthur had delivered a bundle with her mission clothes inside the previous day, and now she donned them one by one.

Once she had the fatigues on, she sat on her bed and grabbed the boots and the other items she was bringing along on the mission. She slipped the lipstick that held the tranquilizer and nausea tabs into one pocket. Another got the small anti-poison tablet that was part of the eyeshadow palette, and a third, the stimulant from that same source.

Inside the other boot, she hid a thin cord she could use as a garrote and a plastic case containing several gel capsules for her capsule shooter. She pulled the boots on, laced them, and checked the look in her full-length mirror. No one would notice they had things hidden inside them.

She slid her bracelets up under her sleeves and considered adding Brodie’s bracelet knife. Given that it generally sat lower on her arm than her wand bracelets, she left it behind for fear that someone would notice it. She fastened a small Velcro pouch onto the inside of the belt that secured the fatigue pants. It contained her small capsule thrower and six stun rounds for it. She figured that if she had to turn to the weapon, she’d need the flexibility of not having to aim only for bare skin like the tranquilizer capsules required.

Satisfied with her clothes and accessories, Aisling sat in front of the small desk she used as a place to apply her makeup. The original plan had been to wear masks. The new plan didn’t allow that, so she’d have to use makeup to change her look to fool potential facial scans as best she could. She’d already dyed her hair black, pulled it straight, and bound it harshly into a bun to hide its natural gentle wave.

Now, she turned to theatrical makeup techniques and painted her lips to look thinner than they were by matching her skin tone in the outermost portion, then sharpened up her cheekbones and exaggerated her eyes. She added skin pigmentation in a few places to give her a blotchy complexion and added a small mole to the side of her jaw. The makeup and prosthetics were high-quality and should fool a casual inspection. The boots had a built-in lift to give her an extra inch of height, which wouldn’t hurt, either.

Ultimately, if the military started looking for the culprits and had any suspicion Dragonfly was behind the theft, they’d probably track down her identity. It didn’t escape her attention that such a thing might cause trouble for her sister Cait, who worked in Boston for the US Marshals, but she couldn’t let her personal concerns jeopardize the mission.

She looked in the mirror again to ensure nothing stood out wrongly, then walked down to Mia’s room and knocked on the door.
